The contribution of immigrant-owned businesses to the total U.S. economy is not well understood by the public. Sadly, many people view immigration as a rising problem, but in reality the facts show us that immigrants have overcome this stereotype by successfully contributing to the United States ’ Economy. According to Census 2000, immigrants constitute 12.2 percent of the total U.S. work force, and 12.5 percent of the total population of U.S. business owners. Immigrant-Owned Businesses represent 11.6 percent of all U.S. business income with the majority of immigrants descending from Mexico . The total income generated by immigrants is about $67 million dollars and will continue to rise in the future.
Immigrants are about 30 percent more likely to start a new business than non-immigrants. Immigrants are responsible for $67 million out of the $577 billion dollars the United States brings in annually. The United States proudly offers beneficial opportunities to immigrants by providing them with opportunities that do not easily arise in their home countries. Sergio, a new Latino Immigrant, is looking to find his “American Dream” by opening a grocery store in his local neighborhood.
The United States created a program that gives special preferences for admission to immigrants who invest $1 million in businesses that create at least 10 new full-time jobs. This program helps our economy by providing more job opportunities and has the ability to really help out our current economic state. Statistics have proven that all people are equal and that money does not wear a nationality. America needs pre-existing immigrant-owned businesses to contribute to the economy as well as new immigrant-owned businesses to continue to increase. Knowing that the United States created this program, Sergio is determined to provide more job opportunities and wants to give back to the U.S. Economy in hope of a better life.
Immigrants represent about 5 percent of all new business owners across the United States . Most immigrant-owned businesses are located in California , New York , Florida and Texas . About 34.2 percent of immigrants open new businesses monthly in California making the state the largest Immigrant-Owned Businesses contributor in the country. Contributing roughly $20 million of the $67 million dollars that immigrant-owned businesses rack up each year puts California at the top financially.
Georgia hosts more than 1.8 percent of immigrant business owners with California still leading. About 81,000 new businesses are started each month across the country and the U.S encourages new immigrants to create more successful immigrant-owned businesses. After reviewing many statistics Sergio begins his quest to open his store in North Carolina . He chose to steer away from California due to competition purposes and presents his business ideas to the state.
The United States has a large and dominant group of Mexican Immigrants contributing to the U.S. Economy. Mexican immigrants are responsible for about 2.2 percent of business-owners and 3.25 percent of the total U.S. workforce. The Census 2000 reports that Latino Immigrants make up .0005 percent of business ownership in America . It is estimated that Latinos are less likely to own a business while Mexican Immigrants are the largest immigrant contributing group in the United States . North Carolina approves Sergio’s business plan in hopes of increasing the states immigration contribution.
Immigrant business owners make noticeable contributions to the U.S. economy in several different industries. Immigrants also contribute to wholesale trade and retail trade in America as well. Immigrants contribute 15.9 percent to wholesale trade and 15.5 percent in retail trade which is a significantly large percent and is increasing yearly. As Sergio’s business begins to thrive, he feels like he has his “American Dream” and wants to spread hope to other immigrants looking for the same opportunities. America has provided him with the tools to success leading to a prosperous Latino-owned business.
America is full of endless possibilities and this country is proud to be a diverse operating system. Immigration could be the answer to America ’s many economic problems because of the drive and passion immigrants carry into the county. The possibility of America operating with different countries can also benefit our country and make businesses thrive once again. The opportunity to make money is available to every country no matter race, gender or ethnicity. There are many states that are in need of immigration in order for job opportunities to arise. America , the land of the free, is ready for you and your business ideas!
