Mars® Drinks’ Brews Up A Ground Breaking Year For its FLAVIA® Brand

2009 Brings New Positioning and Partnerships

October 20, 2009, West Chester, PA – FLAVIA, the innovative line of single-serve beverages made specifically for the workplace and a division of Mars Drinks, is celebrating its achievements from 2009. With major announcements surrounding its sustainability initiative and a brand refresh, Mars Drinks’ is further solidifying FLAVIA’s role as a leader in workplace beverages.

“These announcements showcase Mars Drinks’ commitment to innovation,” said Nick Braden, General Manager, Mars Drinks North America. “We are dedicated to being your partner at work by giving employees the added boost they need to get through their day.”

According to a recent Mars/McKinsey study, over 50% of employees feel that in-office hot beverages, such as those provided by FLAVIA, have a positive effect on their productivity, help improve workplace morale and demonstrate employer caring and appreciation of their work.

Brand Refresh
In October, 2008 Mars Drinks launched a refresh of its 25-year-old brand, FLAVIA. With a new tagline - “Think Fresh” - as well as exciting new packaging, FLAVIA has made freshness, choice and convenience center stage to further solidify its role as a leader in workplace beverages.

“Our new packaging features crisp and modern designs, showcasing the authentic ingredients inside every Fresh Pack,” said Braden. “We are passionate about freshness and want our customers to know that only FLAVIA’s Fresh Packs are specifically designed to make sure that each beverage tastes as fresh as if it was brewed at the source of origin.”

Mars Drinks 3-step process – Source – Seal - Serve™ means that employees will enjoy a consistently fresh, tasty beverage each and every time. Since there are no reusable funnels or filters, FLAVIA can offer a vast selection of choices while ensuring that there is no cross-contamination of flavors and with no mess. FLAVIA is a hassle-free, clean and hygienic option for your workplace.

Sustainability
Mars Drinks is also committed to corporate sustainability. In April, Mars Drinks became the exclusive single serve office coffee partner of TerraCycle, the revolutionary up-cycle company that turns waste into new, useful (and reusable) products.

“FLAVIA Fresh Pack Brigades” will be created to collect used FLAVIA Fresh Packs from offices across the country. Once collected, the coffee grinds will be composted and resold as compost material, the Fresh Pack’s plastic nozzle will be recycled, and the film that composes the exterior of the Fresh Pack will be upcycled into a wide range of products such as pencil cases and notebooks.

In addition, workplaces that offer FLAVIA empower their employees with the option to make sustainable decisions when choosing what fresh, quality coffee or hot beverage to drink.

* Rainforest Alliance Certified Beverages: This past fall, Mars Drinks received certification from the Rainforest Alliance for a portion of its three most popular coffees: Breakfast Blend, House Blend and Kona Blend. Receiving this certification involved undergoing a rigorous process that confirmed that the coffee used in FLAVIA’s Fresh Packs comes from farms where forests are protected; rivers, soils and wildlife are conserved; and workers are treated with respect, paid decent wages, properly equipped and given access to education and medical care.
* Brighter Tomorrow at Origin: In addition to the Rainforest Alliance Certified beverages, Mars Drinks launched the Brighter Tomorrow at Origin™ program in 2007. Brighter Tomorrow at Origin works with farmers that grow the products that go into FLAVIA’s Kenyan Coffee to help improve the quality of their product and command a higher price for their yield. In addition, Mars Drinks contributes to projects that provide a social and environmental benefit to the farmers and their families.

Mars Drinks has also found ways to green the other aspects of the FLAVIA experience, including:

* The C400 brewer that uses 40% less energy than the single serve competition. In energy saving mode, it consumes less than 1/3 the energy used by a 12-watt nightlight*.
* The merchandiser, which displays the Fresh Packs in offices, is made from 90% post-industrial recycled content.
